Overview of the Water Meter Replacement Program

The City of Cambridge is modernizing its water system infrastructure to provide the community with better water conservation and leak detection information, as well as to reduce the cost of operation.

Beginning in October 2019, ICONIX Waterworks will install new water meters for all commercial and residential properties. These installations are expected to be completed by December 2020.

Update on May 25, 2020:

In response to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Cambridge's contractor, ICONIX Waterworks, was asked to pause meter installations where access to the inside of customer homes and businesses was necessary. This break has allowed for the development of enhanced safety procedures to keep customers and employees safe in preparation for work to continue.

In partnership with ICONIX Waterworks and the City, the following safety protocols have been reviewed and deemed effective at reducing exposure for both the residents and installers. As such, the continuation of meter installations inside homes and businesses has been approved to continue. 

  • Maintaining social distancing during the installation
  • Pre-Screening upon booking and prior to entering the premises 
  • Appropriate use of mask, gloves, and personal protective equipment
  • Use of disinfectants and hand sanitizers before, during, and after installations

For the proposed installation, there will be minimal: 

  • Interaction between the installer and customer
  • Water disruption to customers
  • Action required by the customer

Update on April 9, 2020:

Due to the coronavirus (COVID-19) guidelines, the City has revised the installation procedure to not include any access into the residence or human contact. ICONIX Waterworks has been contracted to install the new radio transmitters on the exterior of your property with the following protocol: 

  • ICONIX installers will contact the provided telephone number to signal the start of the installation
  • The radio transmitter will be installed overtop your existing meter reading touchpad
  • Installers will leave a notice on the front door upon completion
  • No human contact is required
  • No entry into the premises is required

Radio installations will occur in April and May 2020 and will take place Monday to Friday from 8am to 6pm. *Please note this timeline and procedure will not apply to all households across Cambridge as the project is completed on a section-by-section basis. 

There will be no: 

  • Interaction required with the homeowner
  • No water disruption
  • Installer will be completing work outside of your home
  • No further action required by homeowner

Update on March 15, 2020:

The City of Cambridge and ICONIX Waterworks continue to closely monitor the coronavirus (COVID-19) situation. The City is taking proactive measures and has requested that ICONIX cease meter installations until further notice to help prevent the spread of infection in the community.

While the risk to local residents of contracting COVID-19 remains low, the health and safety of our communities is and always will be top priority for the City and ICONIX.

If you currently have an appointment scheduled, the ICONIX team will be in contact with you when meter installations resume.
